Great Danes

Name of breed: Great Dane
Also known as: German Mastiff
Country of origin: Germany (commonly mistaken to come from Denmark due to the "Dane" part of it's name)
Life expectancy: 10 years (but can live longer/shorter)
First uses: War dog or for hunting large mammals
Kennel Club group: Working
Height: 41-86 cm to shoulder
Weight: 45-91 kg
Colours: Fawn, black, blue, brindle or harlequin, mantle
Personality: Can be very lively at times, but loves nothing better than relaxing and have a habit of climbing all over you and then refusing to move so you can't get up! They love to please and love to be part of the family. They adore people but are also great guard dogs as they want to protect their families. They're said to be one of the best natured dogs in the world and is very gentle, loving and sweet.
Care: Great Danes need large houses with lots of room to run around - due to their strength and large size they can and do knock things over. They shouldn't live outside and should wear coats/fleeces whilst in the cold. They need a six foot high fence so they don't get out of their garden. An adult Great Dane needs half to a full hour of exercise per day and a puppy needs around one and a half hours of exercise, so they need to be in a home where they get lots of time. They grow quite slowly so can't do any major task (e.g. agility, flyball or going out running with you) until they are 18 months old.
